Thematic Index of Music for Viols

The Society's Thematic Index of Music for Viols was produced as a paper copy in six instalments between 1980 and 1992, edited by Gordon Dodd. He then handed the project to Andrew Ashbee and a seventh instalment was issued on CD-ROM in 2002. In 2004 the whole Index was issued on CD-ROM and the paper copy was discontinued. From 2008 the Index will be available on-line in .pdf format (although CD-ROM copies can still be made for those preferring one). It is intended to up-date the Index annually.
The Index is listed by composer, together with a substantial anonymous section. At present the pages are scans of the originals and are not electronically searchable. Annual lists of the up-dates for both new and revised pages (from 2004) are given in the introduction. Initial work concentrated on English sources, which are now largely indexed, but the Society would be grateful for help in searching and indexing continental sources, both printed and in manuscript.

Please contact Dr Andrew Ashbee if you are able to help in any way.

A searchable Index? Help and comments invited!
From time to time the issue of making the Thematic Index more searchable has been raised. As many of you will appreciate, making the Index a fully searchable electronic document would be a mammoth task. Despite the daunting prospect we thought it might be worth making a start by comprising a list sorted by instrumentation. Here we have an example of all 'B' composers and their works, with a clear list of the instrumentation. (please find an explanation of the setup of the list here) Once we have lists -like this one- of all composers it would not be too difficult to compile them to provide users with lists sorted by instrumentation (not by composer), downloadable from this site. Once the desired instrumentation is found on the relevant list, one can go back to the alphabetical list of composers (table above) for more information.
We would love to invite comments from anyone as to what format and sorting method would be the most useful. Please email either the administrator or Andrew Ashbee with your comments. And if you think you have time to spare, offer to help us with it!
